Lesson 2: Trick Interview Question
Why do you want to work here?
Welcome back to another session of Boost! Classes began last week, and we're proud to have over 500 students participating. Thank you for being a part of the TECLA community.
The winning answer to: "Why do you want to work here?"
The Ultimate Test: Can you answer this question in a job interview...in English?
Think you got what it takes to answer the age-old question: "Why do you want to work here?"
Easy peasy, right? Well, not exactly. No pressure, but the answer to this question...well... it's kind of a big deal.
Why, you may ask? Because your interviewer is judging you based on what you say, and even HOW you say it.
But don't worry. We've got your back with some tips to nail that answer.
If you believe in the company's mission:
"I really connected with your company’s mission. I feel like I can relate to it because…"
If you can show the interviewer that you're on the same page with their mission and that it's a big reason you want to work there, they'll probably feel a stronger connection and sense of purpose with you.
If you like their values and work style:
"I really appreciate how you treat your employees and the values of the company."
Letting the interviewer know that you connect with the company's values and work style proves that you get what the company is all about and what's important to them. This can show that you're a good fit for the company culture, which is a big deal when figuring out if someone is the right fit for a role.
If you're looking to take on new challenges:
"I saw the technologies and tools you work with, and I feel like that’s the challenge I’m looking for next in my career."
Demonstrating during an interview that you're up for a challenge shows you're proactive, motivated, and ready to take on new responsibilities and tasks. This gives the impression that you'll be a hard-worker who will add value to the company.
Practice, practice, practice! Brush up for next Monday's performance so you can show your interviewer that you're a good listener.
